You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world!
(c)Mateo Ivankovic 2018 June 12, 2018 Dear Family of Mary! Today’s Gospel (Matthew 5:13-16) talks about salt and light. Our Lady also spoke about salt and light in the October 25, 1996 message. I think Our Lady gives us the way to respond to her Son’s admonition that we be salt and light for the world. Here is the Gospel: “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Mt 5:13-16) Jesus speaks to us today about the wider purpose for each of our lives. He tells us that we have a job to do in the world. We are given to the world to provide two valuable things. First we are salt. Our presence in our families and neighborhoods should make life taste a little better. We should bring joy to others, compassion, kindness, generosity, hope, peace, and love. Our presence should be a catalyst for community. We should be the kind of people others feel blessed by. Then we will draw them to Jesus, who makes us such nice people!! We are also called to be light. How can we be light? My guess is that our lives show the way for others just as lights on hilltops show the way to the city, and lights in the house show where everything is in the house. Lights make is possible to function in the dark. And isn’t our world dark! We live in a world darkened by sin. Only the light of holiness can show us how manage is such a dark place. We need to be good, so others will find their way to the good, and to God who is all good. But how do we become salt and light? Our Lady gives us the way in this message: October 25, 1996 “Dear children! Today I invite you to open yourselves to God the Creator, so that He changes you. Little children, you are dear to me. I love you all and I call you to be closer to me and that your love towards my Immaculate Heart be more fervent. I wish to renew you and lead you with my Heart to the Heart of Jesus, which still today suffers for you and calls you to conversion and renewal. Through you, I wish to renew the world. Comprehend, little children, that you are today the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Little children, I invite you and I love you and in a special way implore: Convert!” Thank you for having responded to my call. “Comprehend, little children, that you are today the salt of the earth and the light of the world.” We are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. But we become salt and light by living the way she describes in the first part of the message. We are invited to open ourselves to God the Creator, so He can change us. He can convert us. He can remold us into the kind of people who do what salt and light do. We open ourselves by coming closer to Mary, who in turn will draw us closer to Jesus, who in turn will show us how to convert. How to be renewed. And when we are renewed, Our Lady will change the world through us! Salt and Light! It happens when we convert.
