Today’s Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Mary points to some powerful realities about our Mother. She has indeed been highly favored by the Father in Heaven. Her name is sacred. Just as the Jews would never say the Name of God, reserving it only for the High Priest, once a year, because it is so holy, so the Angel Gabriel did not use the name of Mary in the Annunciation. It was a sign of reverence and respect to Our Lady, that Gabriel instead called her “full of grace.” There is a full treatment of the Name of Mary at this website: http://www.catholictradition.org/Mary/marys-name.htm But for me, it is enough to just think of how blessed Our Lady was by God, to be reserved from Original Sin, to be born and raised in such holiness, to be asked to become the mother of God’s Son, to bear Him in her womb and after He was born to live with Jesus for 30 years, to follow Him and assist Him in His public ministry, to accompany Him in His Passion and Death, and to become a Mother to the Apostles and to pray with them for the Holy Spirit, and then to quietly spend the rest of her life praying in intercession for all of us. Now she lives in Heaven, but is as close to us as she can possibly be, through unity of heart and through her presence in Medjugorje. Mary is our incredible Mother! Today, then, we will recall the glory of Mary in our hearts. We can pray this Litany of the Holy Name of Mary. How can we thank You enough, dearest Father in Heaven, for Mary, our Mother!!
