Dear Family of Mary!

September 20, 1984

“Dear children! Today I call on you to begin fasting with the heart. There are many people who are fasting, but only because everyone else is fasting. It has become a custom which no one wants to stop. I ask the parish to fast out of gratitude because God has allowed me to stay this long in this parish. Dear children, fast and pray with the heart. Thank you for having responded to my call.”

Today is a fast day! We fast on Wednesday and Friday because Our Lady has asked us to do so. It is part of her plan for peace. Fr. Slavko understood fasting. He was courageous in fasting and prayer. He wrote about the connection between fasting and prayer. They are necessary to one another:

The unification of the body and soul in prayer are particularly manifested in fasting and prayer. The physical fast makes prayer more complete. A person, who fasts, prays better and a person, who prays, fasts more easily. In this way, prayer does not only remain an expression or words, but includes the entire human being. Physical fasting is an admission to God before men that one cannot do it alone and needs help. A person experiences his helplessness more easily when he fasts and that is why, by means of the physical fast, the soul is more open to God. Without fasting, our words of prayer remain without a true foundation. In the Old Testament the faithful fasted and prayed individually, in groups and in various life situations. Because of this, they always, experienced God’s help. (cf. Ezra 8: 21-23; 2 Chr 20:12). Jesus ascribes a special power to fasting and prayer, especially in the battle against evil spirits (cf. Mk 9:29). The same practice is found in the tradition of the Catholic Church and is most evident in the rules of all orders and religious communities. St. Bernard wrote about the relationship between fasting and prayer saying:

“I will tell you something that you will understand easily and what you have often experienced, if I am not mistaken: fasting gives certainty to prayer and makes it fervent…By means of prayer strength is gained for fasting and through fasting the grace of prayer. Fasting strengthens prayer and prayer strengthens fasting and offers it to the Lord.”

This is apparent because by means of fasting, one becomes more awake and open to God and to what is spiritual. For the same reason, fasting is connected to the Eucharist. While a person practices renunciation and lives for a period of time with bread, he prepares himself for a meeting with the Divine Bread. This exceptional meeting with God, especially in connection with the Eucharist, is evidence of how fasting is positive in itself and how it enables us to realize the fundamental goal of prayer – the meeting of the entire person with God, the Savior. (Fr. Slavko Barbaric. “Fast with the Heart”. P. 110-111)

I must admit that for me fasting is the last thing I want to add to my busy life. But I believe that if I do not fast as Mary asks, I will be limping through life on one leg. Fasting and prayer go together. We will find ourselves closer to God in prayer if we fast. It is not something we can figure out, but something we must live.

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary!  Our fasting today can give us something to offer Our Lady on her birthday, a little gift of our sacrifice for her intentions!

Mother Mary, please procure for us the grace to fast. Help us to live as you have asked us to live, through prayer and fasting!!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Dear Family of Mary!
“…In a special way, my motherly heart loves the shepherds. Pray for their blessed hands. Thank you.” (September 2, 2016)
Our Lady loves the priests. Over and over again she asks us to pray for her priests, to intercede for them, because they are so important for the salvation of souls. Mother Teresa of Calcutta also loves the priests. She has firsthand knowledge of the importance of the priest in the lives of the dying. She has seen over and over again the power of the priest to reconcile sinners with God, to give them what she calls the “ticket to heaven” (Baptism).
Let me share one of the stories she tells in her talk to the Priests’ Retreat in Rome in 1990 (https://marytv.tv/?page_id=513 ). It shows this incredible dynamic between dying souls and the priest.
“I have seen it again and again. Our people in our home for the dying. After they have made their peace with God…something…something…. When I was last time in New York, we have a home for AIDs. And there was a phone call, a young man was phoning. “Mother Teresa, I think I have got the disease. I am going to the doctor, and if he says that I have it, I want to come to you. I want to die with you.” And I said, “Yes, you will be most welcome.”
The next day, on the phone again, he said, “Yes I have it.” And I said, “Yes, come immediately. I will be very happy to have you. Come.” And he came. And the joy on that man’s face, that he was wanted. That he would be able to make his peace with God. That there would be some priest there to forgive him, to help him to make the peace with Jesus. He was not there two weeks and we prepared him to die. And he died a beautiful death, beautiful death.
What the priest could give to that man! That joy, that peace that no one can give. He died a holy death because his heart was all so spotlessly pure. We have wonderful happenings in our homes where people come face to face with God. Face to face, with the help of the priest who prepares them, who helps them to find the joy of loving and being loved. What a wonderful gift of God the priest is! But what a wonderful and great responsibility to give Jesus. (St. Teresa of Calcutta, Priests’ Retreat, Rome, 1990)
“…In a special way, my motherly heart loves the shepherds. Pray for their blessed hands. Thank you.” (September 2, 2016)
Let’s pray for our priests in union with St. Teresa of Calcutta and Our Lady of Medjugorje. What a wonderful and great responsibility the priests have, and how much we need them!

St. Teresa of Calcutta
Dear Family of Mary!
“…My children, in your earthly life, be led by my example. My life was pain, silence and immeasurable faith and trust in the Heavenly Father. Nothing is by chance: neither pain, nor joy, nor suffering, nor love. All of these are graces which my Son grants to you and which lead you to eternal life. Of you, my Son asks for love and prayer in Him. As a mother I will teach you: to love and to pray in Him means to pray in the silence of your soul and not only reciting with your lips; it is even the least beautiful gesture done in the name of my Son – it is patience, mercy, the acceptance of pain and sacrifice done for the sake of another.” (September 2, 2016)
Yesterday Mother Teresa of Calcutta was canonized a saint! What a joy for us all! We can freely call upon her for intercession and aid! She will be busier now than she was on earth (if that is possible, knowing how much she poured herself out for us all when she was with us). Today we can ask her to pray for us, and for our loved ones and all who need heavenly aid.
In honor of Mother Teresa’s canonization, Mary TV was able to show a talk that she gave at the Priest’s retreat in Rome in 1990. You can watch it on the Mary TV Channel.
It strikes me that Our Lady’s words in her most recent message really carry the essence of St. Teresa of Calcutta’s spiritual way. Reread the excerpt above, and you will find Mother Teresa in these words!
And for her part, St. Teresa of Calcutta understood Our Lady. She talks about her with great insight. Because Mother Teresa was so in love with Jesus, she had to know His Mother well! Here are a couple of quotes from Mother about our relationship with Mary. Indeed, Our Lady can lead us by her example. She has walked our walk. She knows pain, silence and immeasurable faith and trust! She knows how to surrender to the Heavenly Father in all things.
St. Teresa of Calcutta wrote to her sisters:
10 August 1971
My Dearest Children,
…May our Mother be a mother to each one of us and so the cause of our joy. And may each one of us be Jesus to her and so become the cause of her joy. No one learned the lesson of humility as well as Mary did. She was the handmaiden. To be a handmaiden is to be at someone’s disposal – to be used according to someone’s wish – with full trust and joy. Cheerfulness and joy were Our Lady’s strength. Only joy could have given her the strength to go in haste over the hills of Judea to do the work of handmaiden to her cousin. So let us go in haste over the hills of difficulties…
Mother House
28 June 1972
Dearest Children,
Let us ask the Sacred Heart for one very special grace: love for Our Lady. Ask Him to give and deepen our love and make it more personal and intimate for her;
To love her as He loved her.
To be a cause of joy to her ash He was.
To Keep close to her as He kept.
To share with her everything, even the cross.
Each one of us has our cross to bear, for this is the sign that we are His. Therefore, we need her to share it with us…
…Holiness is not a luxury but a simple duty for you and me. Very great holiness becomes very simple if we belong fully to Our Lady…
 …I am sure each one of us has much to thank God;
For all the tiring journeys we have made by road, by drain, by plane, by cycle in search of souls.
For all the joy we have tried to spread throughout the world.
For letting us give Our Lady full liberty to use us.
(From Mother Teresa of Calcutta. “The Love of Christ – Spiritual Counsels” 1982)
Our Lady’s words are echoed in these brief quotes. Both women were at heart mothers! Each one calls us “Dear Children”! Each one recognizes the trials of life, but accepts them as the way to love Jesus and to do His will. Each one is present to us now, as they are in heaven interceding for us and loving us.
Mother Teresa truly understood how important it is to love Our Lady. Please, St. Teresa of Calcutta, help us to grow in our love for Mother Mary. Help us to thank the Father for her presence among us in these days. Mother Teresa, pray for us!
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

First Friday
Dear Family of Mary!
Today Our Lady comes to Mirjana with a message of peace for us. As we await her words to us, let’s open our hearts to her last message on August 2. We are the most blessed of children to have such a Mother!!
August 2, 2016
“Dear children, I have come to you, among you, for you to give me your concerns so that I may offer them to my Son; that I may intercede for you before Him for your good. I know that each of you has his concerns, his trials. Therefore I am inviting you in a motherly way: come to the table of my Son. He is breaking bread for you; He is giving Himself to you; He is giving you hope; He is asking for more faith, hope and serenity from you. He is seeking of you to battle within against egoism, judgement and human weaknesses. Therefore, as a mother, I am saying: pray; because prayer gives you strength for the interior battle. My Son, when He was little, often said to me that there will be many who will love me and call me ‘mother’. Among you, I feel love. Thank you. For the sake of that love I am imploring my Son that none of you, my children, will return home the same as he came; that you may take with you all the more hope, mercy and love; that you may be my apostles of love who will witness with their lives that the Heavenly Father is the source of life and not of death. Dear children, anew, in a motherly way I am imploring you, pray for the chosen ones of my Son, for their blessed hands – for your shepherds – that they may preach my Son with all the more love and in this way bring about conversions. Thank you.”
It is a comfort to know that Our Lady desires to take our concerns to herself, and to pray for us in our trials. When she comes to Mirjana, we can give them to her again!
I will send out the message as soon as I get it, and of course we will post the video of the apparition asap!!
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Our Lady wants us to change. She wants us to become more and more like our heavenly Father. She wants us to understand that God loves us so very much that He will not stop trying to heal us, change us, and renew us. He will never tire of forgiving us! That is because He is “The source of life and not death!” He gives life!
Fr. Leon has been sharing what we call “Sanctuary Snippets” before each English Mass in Medjugorje. We are taping them, and archiving them on our home page atwww.marytv.tv so that his amazing catechesis will not be lost.
Today I want to share the “Snippet” for August 30, 2016, because it helps us understand what Our Lady is telling us in this excerpt from her August 2, 2016 message:
I want to talk to you today about forgiveness. You know we constantly say “God loves you.” And I don’t think people really believe us, or maybe we ourselves don’t really believe it very much. Because with us first of all, with our parents: when we are good they reward us, and when we are bad they punish us. Then we have this idea that God is somehow similar. We think we have to be neat and tidy enough before God would love us.
But God is love! Always!
This means that when you are at your most debauched, depraved – pushing grannies into the street and torturing kittens to death – when you are in that phase of your life, God loves you passionately. Because He does not change. Only we change with respect to Him.
So we can talk in the Bible about God’s anger and God’s justice, yes, but that is still His love. He doesn’t change. If we are not repentant, then out of love He gives us what we love…we choose hell. Life without Him. But He doesn’t change. He always loves us passionately.
Imagine when you were a child, when you were newly baptized, and you think you were this innocent or this holy. And then you grew up and you discovered all kinds of sins. Or you think you have fallen down in some way here. What happens when you go to confession? Do you think you then climb up to about here? And God thinks “Ok, I will tolerate you. I won’t destroy you yet. But I don’t really like you very much.” Is that what God does? No!! (Everyone is nodding.)
When God forgives us He has to reach with His grace to lift us up. He lifts us up to something higher than we were before. More than when we were newly baptized infants. We become something greater than a newly baptized infant. Because a newly baptized infant has received the Holy Spirit. But when God forgives us, he raises us up higher because we become something greater. We are a forgiven liar, a forgiven cheat, a forgiven murderer, a forgiven adulterer, and that is something greater, because God’s love has had to reach down and lift us up!
So when we say that God loves you, this is what we mean. That He loves us passionately. That we should not be afraid of Him.
Mercy of course only applies to those who want it. If you don’t want it, it doesn’t come to you. It is no use to you. You can’t receive it if you are not repentant. That is not mercy, that is just a joke. If you don’t repent, and you say God is mercy, the year of mercy…that is not mercy. That is a lie. Mercy needs repentance in order to be able to receive it. If we are unwilling to change our hearts, we can’t receive mercy.
So it is a horror to come to Medjugorje and say: I want to carry on hating. I want to carry on being a (witch). I want to carry on being a horrible person. No, this is a great opportunity. Open your hearts, open them to Our Lady, and let her change us!!
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! Amen.
(Fr. Leon Periera.  August 30, 2016 Snippet. )

Dear Family of Mary!
August 25, 2016
“Dear children! Today I desire to share Heavenly joy with you. You, little children, open the door of your heart so that hope, peace and love, which only God gives, may grow in your heart. Little children, you are too bound to the earth and earthly things, that is why, Satan is rolling you like the wind rolls the waves of the sea. Therefore, may the chain of your life be prayer with the heart and Adoration of my Son Jesus. Give over your future to Him so that, in Him, you may be joy and an example with your lives to others. Thank you for having responded to my call.”
Our Lady tells us that we are “too bound to the earth and earthly things.” Satan is rolling us like the wind rolls the waves of the sea. She recommends that we pray with the heart and adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. She wants us to give over our future to Him.
I want to suggest that she has given us another tool to use in grounding ourselves in Jesus, and letting go of the world. That tool is fasting. Every Wednesday and Friday she asks us to fast on bread and water. Tomorrow is Wednesday! If we don’t want to get rolled over like the waves of the sea, we might try to fast as she asks.
Here is a prayer that Fr. Slavko wrote for the beginning of a fast day. It might help us as we begin our fast!
O Lord God, You are the Creator of the entire world and my Creator! Today I thank You for having so wonderfully arranged the world. Thank You for the fruitfulness that you have bestowed on mother earth for it to bear such a vast variety of fruit. Thank You for the food prepared from the fruits of the earth. Father, I rejoice with Your creatures; I rejoice today with all the fruit and I give You thanks. O Lord, thank You for our need for the daily bread and for the need of daily drink.
Father, thank You for having created my organism to be able to use the fruit of the earth so as to grow and to serve You. Thank you, Father, for all those who, by their labor provide new possibilities for life on earth. Thank you for all those who have much and give to others. Thank You for all those who hunger for the Heavenly Bread as they eat the bread of this earth. Father, I also thank You for all those who have nothing to eat today because I am convinced You will send them help through the goodness of others.
Father, today I resolve to fast. In doing so, I do not despise your creatures. I do not renounce them; I only want to rediscover their worth. I have decided to fast because Your prophets fasted, because Your Son Jesus Christ fasted and because His Apostles and Disciples fasted. I especially decide to fast because Your servant and our Mother, Mary, also fasted. She calls me to fast: “Dear children! Today I call on you to begin fasting with the heart!” (10/20/1984)
Father, I present this day of fasting to You. Through fasting, I want to listen to Your Word and to live it more fully. During this day, I want to learn to be turned more toward You, despite everything that surrounds me. With this fast, which I take freely upon myself, I pray to You for all those who are hungry and who, because of their hunger, have become aggressive. I offer this fast to You for peace in the world….
Mary, You were free in Your heart and bound to nothing except the Father’s Will. Obtain for me the grace of a joyful fast today, in which my heart will be able to sing a song of thanksgiving with You. Obtain for me the grace that my decision to fast may be firm and lasting. I offer the difficulties and the hunger I am going to feel today for all people. Mary, Pray for me. Let every evil and temptation of Satan be kept away from me today through Your intercession and through the power of Your protection. Mary, teach me to fast and to pray so that day by day, I may become more and more like You and Your son, Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Fr. Slavko Barbaric. “Fast with the Heart”. Par 12.1)
May we grow less bound to the earth and more bound to heaven on this day!!
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Dear Family of Mary!
“Dear Children! Again today in a special way I want to invite you to live my messages. Dear children, do not just speak about my messages but live my messages. Be my living sign, a sign of my presence here and irradiate others with your presence here. Pray dear children through this time more. Pray together with me for my intentions. Follow me, dear children, live my messages. Fear not, I am with you and intercede for all of you before my Son. Thank you, dear children, also today, for having responded to my call.”
August 26, 2016, to Ivan on Mt. Podbrdo

Ivan Dragicevic met with his prayer group last Friday evening around the statue on Apparition Hill. Our Lady appeared to him and gave this message. There were many people gathered together to greet Our Lady. How wonderful it is to be present when she comes!!
Our Lady speaks to us very clearly. She wants us to live her messages. She doesn’t mind if we talk about them, but the real focus for her is on living her messages. She is very much like Jesus, who cautioned his followers to live what He taught them:
“Why do you call me `Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation upon rock; and when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But he who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great. A clean house, like when using Kodiac Clean Pressure Wash (Luke 6:46-49)
Though Our Lady’s words are not on a par with the Word of God, she has come to us as a messenger from Heaven. And she is our Heavenly Mother. Jesus gave her to us from the Cross. So her messages are important. I believe they are a great help for us in living Jesus’ Words. Prayer, fasting, Scripture, Eucharist and Confession…these are basic ways to learn from and follow Jesus.
We want to build our house on rock, on the Rock who is Christ. We want to live in such a way that we will be signs of Our Lady, who has come to bring us to her Son. We want to shine out with the peace and joy we have received from Our Lady in Medjugorje, so that others will turn to her presence and receive the graces of this time.
“Follow me, dear children, live my messages. Fear not, I am with you and intercede for all of you before my Son.” This very familiar call from Our Lady is filled with comfort and hope. “Follow me” – it is a joy for children to follow their Mother. “Live my messages” – Our Lady’s messages make our lives happy, productive and healthy. “I am with you.” – This is the greatest gift of Medjugorje, the knowledge and experience of Our Lady’s presence with us!! “[I] intercede for all of you before my Son.” – we have a sure hope that Our Lady’s prayers for us will be heard. Such a firm foundation to our hope in the future!
Thank you, dearest Mother, for being with us, praying for us, leading us, and teaching us along our way to eternal life. We love you!!!

Thank you for having responded to my call.” (August 25, 2016)
Why is it that in these difficult, violent times Our Lady would call us to heavenly joy? Why would she want to share heavenly joy with us? What is it about God’s joy that is relevant to us here on earth?
I want to say that Heavenly Joy is everything for us in these days. God’s joy is the power that will see us through all our trials and holy labors. God’s joy is the truth that underlies everything. God is love, a love so deep and powerful it cannot be stopped. And that love is aimed at us! We are the recipients of God’s love every moment of every day. And that love is joy for us! Eternal, everlasting joy! This is our future, our legacy and our destiny. So God’s heavenly joy is everything for us!

Our Lady has spoken of joy many times in her messages. I have collected five of them for us to use in our rosaries for meditation today. We can meditate on the August 25, 2016 message on the opening beads, and use each of these messages for the five decades. We want to let God’s joy penetrate our beings. Let’s begin to pray on it!

May 25, 1988 “Dear children! I am inviting you to a complete surrender to God. Pray, little children, that satan may not carry you about like the branches in the wind. Be strong in God. I desire that through you the whole world may get to know the God of joy. By your life bear witness for God’s joy. Do not be anxious nor worried. God himself will help you and show you the way. I desire that you love all men with my love. Only in that way can love reign over the world. Little children, you are mine. I love you and want you to surrender to me so that I can lead you to God. Never cease praying so that satan cannot take advantage of you. Pray for the knowledge that you are mine. I bless you with blessings of joy. Thank you for having responded to my call.”

October 25, 1997 “Dear children! Also today I am with you and I call all of you to renew yourselves by living my messages. Little children, may prayer be life for you and may you be an example to others. Little children, I desire for you to become carriers of peace and of God’s joy to today’s world without peace. That is why, little children, pray, pray, pray! I am with you and I bless you with my motherly peace. Thank you for having responded to my call.”

October 25, 2015 “Dear children! Also today, my prayer is for all of you, especially for all those who have become hard of heart to my call. You are living in the days of grace and are not conscious of the gifts which God is giving to you through my presence. Little children, decide also today for holiness and take the example of the saints of this time and you will see that holiness is a reality for all of you. Rejoice in the love, little children, that in the eyes of God you are unrepeatable and irreplaceable, because you are God’s joy in this world. Witness peace, prayer and love. Thank you for having responded to my call.”
December 25, 2006  “Today is a great day of joy and peace. Rejoice with me. Little children, in a special way, I call you to holiness in your families. I desire, little children, that each of your families be holy and that God’s joy and peace, which God sends you today in a special way, may come to rule and dwell in your families. Little children, open your hearts today on this day of grace, decide for God and put Him in the first place in your family. I am your Mother. I love you and give you my Motherly Blessing.”
September 02, 2013 “Dear children, I love you all. All of you, all of my children, all of you are in my heart. All of you have my motherly love, and I desire to lead all of you to come to know God’s joy. This is why I am calling you. I need humble apostles who, with an open heart, will accept the Word of God and help others to comprehend the meaning of their life along side God’s word. To be able to do this my children, through prayer and fasting, you must learn to listen with the heart and to learn to keep submitting yourselves. You must learn to keep rejecting everything that distances you from God’s word and to yearn only for that which draws you closer to it. Do not be afraid. I am here. You are not alone. I am imploring the Holy Spirit to renew and strengthen you. I am imploring the Holy Spirit that, as you help others, you too may be healed. I am imploring Him that, through Him, you may be God’s children and my apostles.”

PS. We are approaching the canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. I feel that Mother’s intercession will be very powerful for us on her canonization day. Let’s prepare our hearts for that day by asking for her intercession and thanking her for her great fidelity to God’s plan for her life. She is a true hero for us all!
Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, you allowed the thirsting love of Jesus on the Cross to become a living flame within you, and so became the light of His love to all. Obtain from the Heart of Jesus (here make your request). Teach me to allow Jesus to penetrate and possess my whole being so completely that my life, too, may radiate His light and love to others. Amen.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Cause of Our Joy, pray for me.
Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, pray for me.

Dear Family of Mary!
July 25, 2016
“Dear children! I am looking at you and I see you lost; and you do not have prayer or joy in your heart. Return to prayer, little children, and put God in the first place and not man. Do not lose the hope which I am carrying to you. May this time, little children, every day, be a greater seeking of God in the silence of your heart; and pray, pray, pray until prayer becomes joy for you. Thank you for having responded to my call.”
Since today we receive another message, I thought we could reflect on last month’s message one more time. As I read this message I see that Our Lady has given us everything we need to endure the difficulties of our time.
“Dear children! I am looking at you and I see you lost; and you do not have prayer or joy in your heart.” How often do we feel lost, forget to pray, or lose our joy? It is pretty easy to get thrown off course. Our world comes barreling in on us through the media constantly. Our fears mount, we question our faith, and we get depressed. So fast!
“Return to prayer, little children, and put God in the first place and not man.”Step one: to save ourselves from this downward spiral, we must pray, and in prayer put God on the throne of our hearts. NOT MAN! NOT THE THINGS OF MAN! NO WAY!
“Do not lose the hope which I am carrying to you.” Like a child sent off to school with his lunch money in hand, Our Lady tells us to hang on to our hope, the hope she has brought to us. Without hope we will be prey to all sorts of sadness.
“May this time, little children, every day, be a greater seeking of God in the silence of your heart…” Instead of surrounding ourselves with the constant din of the news and entertainment media, we can seek out silence. And in that silence, we can seek God. He will be found.
“…and pray, pray, pray until prayer becomes joy for you.” Once we have found God in the silence of our hearts, we can just stay there, and talk to Him for as long as we want. He will listen. He always listens. And He will solve all our problems, calm our fears, show us His plan for us, and bring us joy!!
That is all we need to make it through this stormy time.
Thank you, dearest Mother, for responding to our call, and coming to us in Medjugorje!

Dear Family of Mary!
“…My Son, when He was little, often said to me that there will be many who will love me and call me ‘mother’. Among you, I feel love. Thank you…”(August 2, 2016)
Our Lady just snuck into the August 2 message this little peak into her life with Jesus, when He was a little boy. Isn’t it beautiful?
Imagine Mother Mary walking down the road with little Jesus, maybe they are holding hands, maybe they are carrying things from the market in Nazareth. Anyway, they are just walking and talking a bit. And the little Jesus looks up at His Mother, and says something like, “You know, Mom, there will be many who will love you and call you ‘mother’.” I am sure Our Lady had no idea what he was talking about. There were just the three of them in the family. She may have smiled, and wondered what He meant. She obviously tucked His words away in her memory and her heart for a later day.
And she says that Jesus “often” said those words to her. He knew something. He knew that He was going to acquire many brothers and sisters and that those “spiritual” siblings would look to Our Lady as their Mother. He knew it was the plan of His Father to build a family around Him, a family that would become a Kingdom. And He knew that that Kingdom would need a Queen. Actually, a Queen Mother! And He knew that His Mother would be the one!
Obviously He knew this, because when He was dying on the Cross, He made it official.“Behold your Mother,” he told John. “Behold your son,” He told Mary. Jesus opened up His family to all of us sinful, unruly, needy people who would be attracted to Him, fed by Him, forgiven by Him, and restored by Him. And we would all need a Mother. Not just any mother, but “The Mother”.
Imagine now that Mother Mary is walking down the road with you, the little you that needs to hold her hand and be guided and cared for by her. Imagine her looking down at you and smiling, and telling you this little story from her heart: “…My Son, when He was little, often said to me that there will be many who will love me and call me ‘mother’. [With] you, I feel love. Thank you…”
We are some of the one’s Jesus was talking about. We call Mary our Mother. We love her. And she feels our love. It is the love of mother and child. There is no stronger bond, no stronger connection than this love. Our Lady has bonded with us, and we with her. She is our Mother now. We are helping to build that family that Jesus foresaw.
Pretty neat!
In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
